7 things to know before visiting Prague

(from a local guide)

Hi, I’m Martina — the Lady of Golden Prague.

If you are about to visit Prague, let me gently share a few things I wish someone told you before your first walk through this city.

1. What should I see?

Of course — the Prague Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge. They are beautiful, and they deserve your time.

But if you only stay there, you will meet Prague… and thousands of other visitors at the same moment.

If you step just a little further — to Nový Svět, Grébovka, Žofín, Vyšehrad, the Queen Anne’s Summer Palace, Letná, Žižkov or Petřín Hill — the city suddenly becomes qui

eter… and somehow closer.

2. How many days do I need?

Two or three days are enough to see the highlights.

But Prague is not a checklist city. It reveals itself slowly, almost shyly.

Give it a little more time, or at least give yourself permission not to rush — you will understand much more.

3. Is Prague expensive?

It can be — especially if you stay only in the very center.

But if you follow the places where locals actually go, the experience changes beautifully.

For example, Café Platýz or Café Louvre — both offer excellent service, good food, and prices that still feel fair.

And while you are there… try traditional dishes like svíčková, or something sweet like štrůdl or kremrole.

Prague has a quiet secret: just one street away, everything becomes more authentic.

4. Is Prague safe?

Yes, very. You can walk here in the evening and feel comfortable.

Just keep the same awareness you would have anywhere else.

Prague is kind — but it still expects you to stay present.

5. What mistakes should I avoid?

The most common one is surprisingly simple: no ticket on public transport.

Inspections are strict, efficient… and not very romantic when they happen.

And the second mistake? Trying to see everything.

Prague is not meant to be completed — it is meant to be felt.

6. What should I actually do to enjoy Prague?

Sit outside. Order a coffee, or a glass of wine. Stay a little longer than planned.

Walk through the Royal Gardens, let the city slow you down,

and if you hear music somewhere… follow it.

Those are usually the moments people remember the most.

7. A small note from locals 💛

We truly like having you here — Prague lives from people who come to discover it.

But if I may gently say one thing on behalf of my friends:

please allow cars to pass sometimes when crossing the street…

and if you are on a bike, sidewalks are not the best stage for it.

It’s a small detail — but it makes the city more pleasant for everyone.

As Karel Čapek once wrote:

“You cannot understand a city just by looking at it.”

He was not only one of our most important writers,

but also the man who introduced the word robot to the world,

and a brave voice who openly warned against rising totalitarianism, including Hitler and Nazism.

A local author who truly deserves your attention when you are here.

And that is exactly Prague.

This is also why I guide —

not to show you more places,

but to help you feel the city in a way that stays with you.

👉 If this feels close to you, you are very welcome to join me:

Or simply write me — I always answer personally.

Take your time in Prague.

It will give something back to you. 💛
